The beach
On my recent trip to Bali, the southern coastline — particularly the areas around Uluwatu and Jimbaran — left a lasting impression. The sunsets there are extraordinary, painting the sky in deep oranges and pinks and creating an atmosphere that’s hard to forget. The southern part of the island offers a mix of cliff-top views, sandy stretches, and lively beachfront spots, and it was a joy to explore these in between moments spent relaxing at the resort.
I stayed for a couple of nights at the Intercontinental in Jimbaran. What stood out most at this resort was its commitment to Balinese design and cultural touches. While many hotels and restaurants on the island mix international influences into their style, the Intercontinental leans into local craftsmanship, traditional motifs, and architecture that feels rooted in place. That authenticity gave the stay a calming, genuine character that I appreciated.

My room was the newly renovated Singaraja room, which showcased Balinese design elements, including a hand-painted mural on the wall. The space felt both comfortable and airy, with a balcony that overlooked verdant gardens — a quiet spot to read or enjoy a morning coffee.

Although one of my full days at the resort coincided with heavy rain, the property offered plenty to do indoors and under cover. A memorable culinary highlight was sampling items from the raw foods menu, which featured inventive options such as a raw pizza and a raw Caesar salad. The raw dishes were fresh, flavorful, and presented with care. Afternoon high tea was another pleasant interlude — a selection of teas and light bites served in a relaxed setting — followed by cocktails at the sunset bar as the sky began to change color.

To cap the day I visited the spa for a traditional Balinese massage, an ideal way to unwind after sightseeing. The spa experience was thoughtful and customizable — one detail I especially liked was being able to choose from three different massage oils, and I chose the ginger oil for its warming, soothing scent. The therapists demonstrated skill and attention, and the overall treatment left me relaxed and refreshed.

My plan is to return during the dry season to experience more of the area’s outdoor activities and beaches. If you’re thinking of visiting, keep in mind that some months can be wet — January, for example, can bring significant rain — so timing your trip for drier months will make beach time and cliff-side walks more enjoyable. The Intercontinental in Jimbaran proves to be a convenient base: it’s well-located, richly styled with Balinese character, and offers on-site activities and dining options so you can have a full, relaxed stay without having to travel far.
