Cape Weligama in Sri Lanka is an ideal retreat to unwind, enjoy sweeping ocean views, and experience the relaxed charm of the country’s southern coast.
Cliffside view
If you are planning a visit to Sri Lanka, the Weligama and Mirissa stretch of coastline is a standout option. These neighboring towns are only a few kilometers apart and offer excellent surfing, broad sandy beaches, and some of the most memorable sunsets on the island. The atmosphere here blends laid-back seaside living with enough activity to keep you engaged during your stay.
I stayed at Cape Weligama, a luxury resort perched atop a cliff in Weligama. The property occupies 12 acres of landscaped grounds and sits roughly 40 meters above the Indian Ocean, giving almost every vantage point dramatic ocean panoramas. Its position just outside the center of town makes it peaceful while still close enough for easy visits to local beaches and restaurants.
Garden pool
The resort has 39 villas arranged around shared garden courtyards and pool areas. Each villa is spacious and includes a private patio where you can relax, read, or enjoy breakfast brought directly to your room. The villas are designed to feel open and comfortable, with furnishings and layouts that invite slow mornings and relaxed evenings.
Breakfast by the pool was a highlight: fresh pastries, pancakes, oats, and juice served in a calm setting make for a pleasant start to the day. The dining team pays attention to presentation and fresh ingredients, so meals feel both indulgent and refreshing.

One experience you should not miss is watching a sunrise and a sunset from the resort’s distinctive half-moon infinity pool. The pool’s design emphasizes the ocean view and creates a sense of the water blending into the horizon. During the day, poolside service makes it easy to linger with drinks and snacks, and the setting is perfect for relaxing between activities.
Beyond the pool, the resort offers a range of facilities including a gym and a spa for those who want to stay active or indulge in a treatment. There’s also a cozy library where afternoon high tea is served—an elegant interlude with tea, pastries, and a chance to read or unwind in air-conditioned comfort.

For more active visitors, Cape Weligama organizes a variety of activities such as surf lessons, guided bike tours, stand-up paddleboarding, and boogie boarding. These options allow guests to sample the coastal lifestyle and explore the shoreline in different ways.
I tried stand-up paddleboarding for the first time during my stay. The lessons take place in the bay adjacent to the property, where you can work on balance and paddle technique on manageable waves. For beginners, it’s a fun challenge and a memorable way to connect with the ocean.
Although I didn’t manage a surf lesson this trip, Weligama and nearby Mirissa are known for being very beginner-friendly surf spots. There are numerous surf schools and rental shops in town, and the resort can arrange lessons if you want to learn in a supportive, guided environment.
Villa bedroom
Accommodation at Cape Weligama feels private and calm. The bedrooms are comfortable and the bathrooms well appointed, providing everything you need after a day of sun and activity. Villas are designed to offer shady, breezy spots for relaxation while preserving views of the ocean.

The resort features two on-site restaurants with varied menus that focus on fresh, local ingredients. If you want to explore beyond the property, a short tuk‑tuk ride into town offers a wide selection of local eateries and street food stalls. The town atmosphere is lively—busy streets, vendors, and friendly locals add to the authentic coastal experience.
Exploring Mirissa’s beach and nearby spots during the day is easy, and it’s always delightful to return to Cape Weligama afterward for a quieter, more refined evening. The balance of nearby activity and a tranquil retreat makes this resort a great base for enjoying Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
Overall, Cape Weligama is a strong choice for travelers seeking luxury, stunning ocean views, and opportunities for both relaxation and adventure. Whether you spend your time by the infinity pool, trying out water sports, or sampling local cuisine, the resort provides a memorable coastal escape.
